Layering isn’t just for cold weather outings. Layering home decor properly allows our eyes and brain that same comfortable feeling you feel bundled up around a cozy fire. By properly layering decor you create an atmosphere of harmony and balance by giving the eye a place to land and the brain a place to rest. Layering creates dimension and interest by showing off your personal design style.
Grab a warm beverage and blanket and cozy up to learn how Staging Design Professionals create these purposeful and comfortable living spaces.
First, determine your design style and allow it to flow throughout the entire house. Second, think 3. Odd numbers are hardwired into the brain to be pleasing, and 3 is the most visually pleasing. Next, choose the most significant decor item and layer around it. Form a triangle with that item and at least 2 others that match. The tallest or largest item should be at the back and the smallest or shortest item to the front. If they are all the same height, create a difference by setting a book or cutting board under one or two of the items. The eye sees 3 like items as 1 if you’re decorating a large item like an entry console or dining table. Overlapping them gives a feeling of being cohesive and not disjointed. The same principle applies to artwork. It’s natural to “read” from left to right so place your largest piece on the left and hang two smaller pieces to the right, stacking them with the smallest one at the bottom. (Reminder; place the center of your artwork or grouping 62” from the floor.)
Last, step back and examine it from the entryway. Allow empty space around your display. Don’t overdo it. Follow the Adage: Before you leave the house, look in the mirror and remove one piece of jewelry.
Make a statement that is pleasing, comfortable and purposeful. Your home should be a place of rest, balance and harmony.
